DPW to Observe Labor Day, Mon., Sep. 3

DPW will enforce parking regulations around Nationals Park. Sanitation services will be suspended for the day.

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works will observe Labor Day, Monday, September 3, and most services will be suspended. However, the Nationals will play home games at Nationals Park beginning August 31, 2012 thru September 9, 2012, and parking regulations in that neighborhood will be enforced daily, including September 3. Vehicles violating these restrictions will be ticketed and towed. Other parking regulations, including expired meters, residential parking and street sweeping, will be suspended for the holiday.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, September 4.

  • In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods collections will “slide” to the next day, so Monday’s collections will be made Tuesday, Tuesday’s collections will be made Wednesday and so on.
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday/Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday and Tuesday/Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.
  • Street sweeping will be suspended Monday, September 3 so motorists will not need to move their cars that day.

The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed Monday, September 3 and will reopen Tuesday, September 4 to residents to bring trash, bulk items and recyclables between 1 pm and 5 pm.

Directions to Ft. Totten, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Historic Homeowner Grants Available

The D.C. Historic Preservation Office is now accepting Part I applications for the Historic Homeowner Grant Program. The grants are available to low- and moderate-income households living in specific historic districts. Grants may be up to a maximum of $25,000, except the Anacostia Historic District where the maximum is $35,000.

The application deadline for the Part I application is October 1, 2013.

The grant program is competitive and seeks projects that will make the biggest improvement to their neighborhood.  Grants can be awarded for exterior repairs and major structural work. The grant program is available only to the following historic districts: Anacostia, Blagden Alley/Naylor Court, Capitol Hill, Fourteenth Street, LeDroit Park, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon Square, Mount Vernon Triangle, Shaw, Strivers’ Section, U Street, and Takoma Park. Click here for maps of each district.

The Part I application takes about 30 minutes to complete. In it, homeowners provide photographs of their house and a general description of the repairs and restoration they propose to make. The Part I application is available for download here. Part I applicants who qualify for the program will receive a Part II application. For more details on the program and the full application process, refer to the attached FAQ document or view it here.

Projects selected for grants will be able to start construction in spring 2014.

Questions regarding the program and application process should be directed to Brendan Meyer at (202) 741-5248 or brendan.meyer@dc.gov.
