Special Meeting on Crime and Public Safety

Many residents have noticed a sharp rise in crime and safety issues. These include the ongoing problems in the 1400 block of R, prostitution, the day-laborer harassment near Whole Foods, more frequent drug incidents on N, other problems nearby. . .and more.

The October 5, 2005 public meeting of ANC2F (7:00 pm, Washington Plaza Hotel) will focus on these issues, to seek better enforcement efforts from the MPD, U.S. Attorneys, and the Courts, and to generate greater community awareness and input.

Our normal MPD police report from Lt. Mike Smith will be augmented by the introduction of Inspector Patrick Burke, who joins 3D. The U.S. Attorney's Office will also be represented, as will Councilman Evans's office.

Among topics to be considered:

  • Current crime problems of note
  • Status of New Anti-Prostitution Legislation
  • Senior Citizens Police Program
  • Need for ANC2F Crime and Public Safety Committee
  • US Attorneys Office Initiatives
  • Nuisance Property Program
  • R Street Update

For old time residents of the area, who have worked long and hard to get on top of the crime and safety issues, it is time to renew the diligence paid over the years; for the newcomers, your active participation is vital.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND TURN OUT FOR THIS MEETING.

Chairman ANC2F

MEETING SUMMARY.  Starting this month, your ANC is going to post a summary of actions taken at the meeting.  Look on the ANC2F home page for the list of formal actions taken at each monthly meeting.  In the past, the community has had to wait until meeting minutes were approved, which means waiting at least one month before being able to determine what happed at the public meetings of the ANC.  We think the interests of the community are served if ANC actions are promptly disseminated. Of course, the minutes are the official description of formal actions, and they necessarily control.  They also will be fuller in description.  Community members interested in more detail pending the subsequent publishing of the minutes should feel free to contact their ANC commissioner or to post a query on the website.

A New Website

Welcome to our website. For those of you who have visited us before, you will see a completely revised format and design, which we hope will be more useful for you. Among our new features:

  • Expanded Library. You will find Commission and committee agendas, minutes, our bylaws, policies, official correspondence, and other written materials and forms that may be of interest to you.
  • Important News and Commentary. Our latest news, actions and material we think are of most current interest will be posted on our front page.
  • Commissioner Pages. Each commissioner and the Chairman now has an individual page in which he or she can post news and other items of concern. This can be matters of interest mainly to that commissioner's Single Member District constituents or to the area at large.
  • Feedback Ability and a Community Forum. You can communicate directly to us in a confidential email, or you can participate in an on-line forum to express you views, give feed-back, or make announcements. The Forum will have certain rules designed to keep discussion civil and constructive, but otherwise the sky is the limit on topics and views.
  • Expanded Links to other web sites that we hope will get you the information or services you need.

From time to time, we will post polls to test the pulse of the community on topical issues.

You can sign up on the website to receive emails and alerts from the Commission.

Please check out the new website, and give us your comments. If there are other features you want or need, just let us know.

Charles Reed
Chairman ANC2F

ANC2F is composed of six Single Member Districts (SMDs), each of which includes about 2,000 residents. Voters who reside in the same SMD as the candidate elect the Commissioners. Commissioners are nonpartisan, unpaid local government officials.
