Join the Crime and Public Safety Committee

Your ANC urges you to get active in the fight against crime. It is an increasing problem in our neighborhood, and requires a strong community effort to mobilize the resources needed to combat it.

One of the best ways for you to have a safer community is to become a member of ANC2F's Crime and Public Safety Committee and lend a hand. Each Commissioner has the power to appoint a member from his or her single member district. If you are willing to work on the committee, please notify your ANC Commissioner (or me, if you don't know who your Commissioner is).

The Committee is co-chaired by Mike Sheaffer (michael.k.sheaffer@us.army.mil) and Jennifer Trock (jennifertrock@gmail.com), who can give you further details - or come to our public meeting next Wednesday (November 2 - see home page for where and when) and get a detailed report on the Committee's activities and the latest in crime and safety news.

October Update From the Chairman
October's meeting of your ANC2F was devoted principally to the rising concern of crime in our community. While police figures show persistent declines in many crime categories, we are experiencing a rise in robberies, often with dangerous assaults.

Apart from citizen commentary, we heard from Lt. Mike Smith (our PSA 307 representative), Inspector Patrick Burke (the new 3D second in command); Andy Lopez (Assistant U.S. Attorney, and part of the 3D Community Prosecution Section); Sean Metcalf (Councilmember Jack Evans's office, reporting on R Street activities and Evans's anti-prostitution bill); Lt. Phil Beck (U.S. Park Police, speaking on Logan Circle Park police enforcement); and Norberto Martinez (Mayor's Office of Latino Affairs).

The ANC created a special committee for Crime and Public Safety, which will seek to organize anti-crime initiatives, coordinate with other agencies and organizations, and channel communications and concerns to the Commission with a view toward more effective problem solving. Lt. Col. Mike Sheaffer was appointed as Chairman of the Committee. Each ANC Commissioner will appoint a member from his/her SMD. (I am seeking to appoint Jackie Reed, my wife, who has been very active in anti-crime activities for many years as the 2F-01 representative).

Meanwhile, crime continues to terrorize the area, with a shooting on October 15th near Shiloh Baptist Church, and more robberies reported. LCCA recently organized a protest demonstration, (reported in the Post), and my email continues to fill with many expressions of exasperation over the seemingly intractable problems.

ANC2F is composed of six Single Member Districts (SMDs), each of which includes about 2,000 residents. Voters who reside in the same SMD as the candidate elect the Commissioners. Commissioners are nonpartisan, unpaid local government officials.
