IN MEMORIAM - Jim Brandon
With great sadness, I report the passing of Jim Brandon, our Commissioner for ANC2F-02.
Jim died May 21 following a cerebral hemorrhage he suffered in late April. As many may know, Jim had given long service to ANC2F, having continuously represented ANC2F-02 for 17 years. This past term, Jim was elected Vice Chairman, having also served in the past as Chairman. He was a personal friend as well as a colleague on the ANC.
Jim will be missed by his many friends in the Logan Circle area, many of whom he has helped in one way or another. His ever present, trenchant wit and absolute candor endeared him to all he met. That wit was often exhibited at Commission meetings, in Jim's insistence on getting to the essentials, stating the issues plainly and spearing pomposity. Some may also recall that Jim had been in the military, which he off handedly referred to in his quest for re-election by listing among his achievements that he was the only "trained killer" among the candidates.
In addition to his public service here in Washington, Jim had been a representative and a senator in the Arkansas state legislature. He was a ceaseless advocate for LGBT interests, but he viewed his responsibilities as extending to the community at large. A broader biography of Jim has been published in the Arkansas press: (http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/155502/), and another is due to be published in the forthcoming edition of The Current Newspapers.
I know that Jim would want his constituents to have continued representation on the ANC. Because he passed away after the deadline date for a formal replacement election under the D.C.'s ANC statute, the ANC will consider at its June 7 public meeting, a bylaw change which wil enable the election of a delegate from ANC2F-02 who will have all powers of a commissioner other than voting.
I know I speak for all the Commissioners in encouraging interested residents of Jim's SMD to honor his memory in carrying on his long representation.
There will be a memorial service for Jim this coming Saturday, June 3, at 11:00 a.m. The services will be held at St. Thomas's Parish, 1772 Church Street NW where Jim had been a member for many years.
