Wheels to Africa to Collect Bikes in Washington, D.C. Area
Arlington, Va. – This holiday season, 13-year-old Winston Duncan has big plans for the charity he created just two years ago.
Duncan, with the help of dozens of volunteers throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area, is determined to collect 1,000 bikes – all in one day -- to ship to charities and non-governmental organizations in several African countries.
Duncan started collecting bikes in December 2005 after a vacation to southern Africa that summer inspired him to help find a better means of transportation for the African people. He had witnessed people there walking long distances to pick up medicine and food because there are few cars and even fewer buses.
When the then-fifth-grader returned home, he thought about what he could do, and four months later, he had organized a bike collection in Arlington, developed a website, passed out flyers at local stores, and arranged school assemblies. Hoping to collect 75 bikes, he wound up with 275. This year he hopes to surpass that total by holding the event at six locations on Saturday, December 15.
