New Weekly Hazardous and Electronic Waste Collections

On Friday, May 16th, Mayor Fenty and Department of Public Works Director William O. Howland, Jr. announced the District’s first permanent free, weekly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and electronic recycling (e-cycling) drop-off site, at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station, 3200 Benning Road, NE.  The drop-off site will be open Saturdays, except holidays, from 8 am to 3 pm.  Weekly HHW and e-cycling collections will also begin later this summer at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station, 4900 Bates Road, NE.

Weekly collection sites mean residents can get rid of dangerous household waste and unwanted electronics faster, which will keep our environment and drinking water safer.  All electronics will be broken down into parts and recycled or disposed of safely.  Computers and hard drives will be wiped clean three times using US Department of Defense high-level security wiping procedures.

Acceptable - HHW items include leftover cleaning and gardening chemicals, small quantities of gasoline, pesticides and poisons, mercury thermometers, paint, solvents, spent batteries of all kinds, antifreeze, chemistry sets, automotive fluids, and asbestos tiles.

Unacceptable - Items include ammunition, bulk trash, wooden TV consoles, propane tanks, microwave ovens, air conditioners and other appliances, as well as radioactive or medical wastes.

In addition to the HHW and e-cycling collections, the District will also offer the metropolitan area's first permanent weekly document shredding service for residents at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station beginning Saturday, May 24.  In the age of identity theft, shredding will help give residents some peace of mind.  It also is a safe alternative to throwing away personal information, which can lead to identity theft.

For information about household hazardous waste and e-cycling, visit DPW's website at www.dpw.dc.gov or call 311.

Shaw Library Design

The "FINAL" Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library design has been set.  See: http://www.dclibrary.org/dcpl/cwp/view.asp?a=1273&q=568410 for details.  A Library Community Design Meeting will take place on Monday, June 23, 2008 6:30 pm, at the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Interim Library at 945 Rhode Island Avenue, NW.

In the meantime, a group of Shaw citizens is busy collecting community feedback regarding the kinds of services that should be offered at the library.  There are two ways you can participate.

(1)  A printable survey is available at: http://www.districtdynamos.org/publications/surveys/.  You can print the survey and then mail or fax it in (instructions are on the survey).

(2) An online survey is also available at: http://www.districtdynamos.org/forms/shaw_online_survey.php.

This is your chance to provide your feedback about what services will ultimately be offered at your neighborhood Library.

Potential New Dog Park

A group of local residents is coordinating an application for a legal, neighborhood dog park at the Shaw Recreation Field (11th and Rhode Island Avenue, NW).  The group is trying to collect signatures on a petition to show neighborhood support.  Anyone living within a 10-block radius of Shaw Recreation Field can sign the petition, regardless of their dog-ownership status.  The field for dog-ownership on the petition is merely for statistical purposes.

The ten-block radius extends to 21st Street to the west, Fairmount Street to the north, North Capitol to the east, and G Street to the south.  So, in addition to Shaw, Logan and U Street, this area would include parts of Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Eckington, Bloomingdale, Mount Vernon, Chinatown, Penn Quarter, Washington Circle and Foggy Bottom.

Signatories must include first and last names and mailing addresses, or they will be invalidated.  If you sign the online petition, you should not sign any circulating hard-copy.  More than one person in the same household may sign the petition; both are obviously taxpayers and should get separate and equal status.  (Children's names should not be included.)

Make-up Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling Event

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that it will conduct an additional Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling collection event, to accommodate District residents who did not get a chance to participate in last Saturday's semi-annual event.

Last week's event attracted more than twice the number of people who came last year.  Not everyone could stay until their turn to unload their toxic items and unwanted electronic goods, so DPW is offering this additional collection event to apologize to residents and express its appreciation for their commitment to protecting the environment.

WHO: DC Department of Public Works

WHAT: Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling Collection Event

WHEN: Saturday, May 3, 9 am to 3 pm, rain or shine

WHERE: RFK Stadium, Lot 7, 2400 East Capitol St., SE (If driving west on East Capitol St., stay in the right lane to reach the Lot 7 Entrance Gate.  If driving east on East Capitol St., make a left on 19th St. then a right on C St. and use the C Street Entrance.)

May 17: Weekly Drop-offs Begin

Beginning May 17, DPW will provide weekly HHW/e-cycling collections for District residents on Saturdays at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station, 3200 Benning Road, NE, 8 am to 3 pm.  Later this summer, Saturday HHW/e-cycling drop-offs will begin at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station.

ANC2F is composed of six Single Member Districts (SMDs), each of which includes about 2,000 residents. Voters who reside in the same SMD as the candidate elect the Commissioners. Commissioners are nonpartisan, unpaid local government officials.
