Reconstruction of 11th Street, NW -- Work Scheduled to Begin December 1

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin the reconstruction of 11th Street, NW, between L and O Streets, on December 1, 2008.  Two-way traffic will be maintained on 11th Street during the project although there will be temporary lane closures.  Also, during work in the intersections, traffic on the cross streets may be temporarily detoured to adjacent intersections.

The planned improvements include the reconstruction of the roadway, new sidewalks, new street lights, new curbs and gutters, and new bike lanes.  In addition, DDOT will upgrade the traffic signals and modify the timing of the lights.  Utility and waterline upgrades are also planned along with landscaping and drainage improvements.  Streetcar tracks embedded in the roadway also will be removed.

The work will be done in four phases:

§          Phase 1: North side of 11th Street between L and M Streets.

§          Phase 2: North side between N and O Streets.

§          Phase 3: South side between L and N Streets.

§          Phase 4: South side between N and O Streets.

The project will take approximately 240 days and will be substantially completed in July 2009.  Crews will work between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and DDOT will keep the community informed about scheduled construction activity and the project's progress.

For more information about the project please contact the construction manager, Osman Mohamed, or DDOT's project engineer, Michael Conley, at (202) 898-1720.  You may also visit the construction office located at 1200 N. Street, NW, or the project's website at www.11streconstruct.com

The Shaw Dog Park is Now Open

Yesterday, Mayor Adrian Fenty and Clark Ray, Director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, hosted a "leash-cutting" ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Shaw Dog Park.  The Shaw Dog Park is the District's first off-leash public dog park.  It is located at the Shaw Recreation Center field, on the east side of the 1600 block of 11th Street, NW (between Q and R Streets, NW).

The 15,000 square foot dog park, which will allow dogs to run off leash behind fences, includes a separate dog run for smaller dogs under 25 pounds.  Bag dispensers for collection of dog waste and trash receptacles are on site.

This facility would not have become a reality without the personal involvement of both Mayor Fenty and Councilmember Evans.  I'd also like to recognize George Kassouf, founder of Dog Owners of Greater Shaw, for his years of engagement on this issue and his countless of hours of work on the citywide dog park initiative, as well as the many other DOGS members and the hundreds of community residents who supported this initiative.

ANC2F is composed of six Single Member Districts (SMDs), each of which includes about 2,000 residents. Voters who reside in the same SMD as the candidate elect the Commissioners. Commissioners are nonpartisan, unpaid local government officials.
