Burke Park encampment

  • by

After significant community concerns were raised at our 2F Public Safety and Education Committee meetings regarding neighbors experiencing homelessness in Burke Park, ANC 2F has taken the following actions:

UPDATE JULY 8TH

  • On July 7, 2021, the ANC voted unanimously (eight in favor with zero abstentions) to approve a resolution that would request a stay on any efforts to clear the encampment while efforts are underway to seek housing solutions.
  • Should the stay be granted, a Day of Action is planned for July 21, bringing together the ANC and representatives from the Department of Behavioral Health, Department of Housing Services, Unity Healthcare, the Director of Community Response, HIPS, Miriam’s Kitchen, Ward 2 Mutual Aid, Pathways, and community volunteers for an all-day agency multi-agency intervention.
  • A doctor who specializes in addiction medicine will be addressing addiction concerns and can move neighbors to RAPP detox if required
  • DBH will address any mental health issues and will be bringing the team that does severe mental illness intervention with transportation immediately available for medical or mental health evacuation. There is 37-foot bus that arrives with all the needed tools for interventions
  • DHS, HIPS, Miriam’s Kitchen will be making sure that all the residents are document perfect and Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tools (SPDATs) are up to date and ready to expedite the housing voucher process.
  • Unity Healthcare and DC Health and Wellness will be providing medical and doctor services.
  • Volunteers will make sure everyone has food stamps, and any other DC based benefits that will keep needs down and reduce desperate behavior
  • Volunteers have offered to drive park residents to the DMV to make sure they have the necessary identification for the voucher process. Efforts to secure a time block at the DMV are pending, but the group is prepared to do walk-up if needed.
  • Daily community cleanups of the park continue and will include laundry services on the Day of Action.
  • Those who have vouchers already will have their social workers present on the Day of Action to facilitate apartment tours with units that 2F08 Commissioner Alexandra Bailey has identified in the SMD that are suitable and are amenable to housing park residents.
  • Commissioner Bailey is working to coordinate a job fair with businesses who may be seeking new hires. This will open a new line of vouchers.
  • If community members feel a violence interrupter is needed, please contact Commissioner Bailey at 2F08@anc.dc.gov.
  • If given the stay, a portable bathroom and hand washing station request will be renewed.
