ANC 2F Regular Monthly Meeting Agenda – December 1, 2010

Wednesday, December 1, 2010 – 7:00 PM

The Community Forum portion of the ANC 2F meeting this month will consist of a joint meeting with the LOGAN CIRCLE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION, dedicated to the D.C. Public Schools in our area. With the newly created Education Committee of ANC 2F and a similarly proposed one of LCCA, a determined effort is initiated to improve the quality and suitability of our public schools. The objective is to provide first rank educational facilities and staff for the increasing number of families with young children in the area. Dr. Peggy O’Brien, Chief Family and Public Engagement, DCPS will be at this meeting. THE GOAL OF THIS FORUM IS TO HAVE A WIDE RANGING DISCUSSION ON THE NEEDS AND WISHES OF AREA RESIDENTS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS THAT WILL MAKE PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS A VIABLE OPTION FOR AREA PARENTS AND NOT REQUIRE EXPENSIVE PRIVATE SCHOOLING OR RELOCATION TO SUBURBAN SCHOOL SYSTEMS.

ANC, LCCA To Hold Education Meeting Dec. 1

We are hearing from more and more constituents who have interest in or are concerned about education issues in our neighborhoods.  If the growing numbers of strollers and young faces on our streets are any indication, it’s a feeling that is shared by many more residents.  As education reforms move forward in the District, it’s more crucial than ever that we have a voice in charting the future course of schools in our community.  We also want to keep our community vibrant by ensuring that fewer parents feel they need to move to the suburbs in order for their children to get a quality education.

That’s why ANC2F and the Logan Circle Community Association are holding a special joint meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1., at the Washington Plaza Hotel (on Thomas Circle).

At our monthly meeting on Nov. 3, the ANC also amended its bylaws to establish a standing Education Committee, which is chaired energetically by Evelyn Boyd Simmons.  If you would like to learn more about the committee or get involved, contact us here at this website.

And turn out, if you can, at our Dec. 1 meeting!

No CDC Meeting on November 17

Due to lack of agenda items, there will be no CDC meeting tomorrow. Because the CDC does not hold a December meeting, the next meeting will be January 26, 2011.

Public Hearing on Franklin School

A public meeting has been called by the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) on the future of historic Franklin School (13th and K, NW). The purpose of the meeting is to take community comments on a proposal to declare the school “surplus” property, for which there is no public use. The DMPED will then formulate a proposal to the D.C. Council on whether to declare the property surplus. If the Council so determines, then the second step of the new laws on disposition of DC owned property will commence in the search for taker.

The future of Franklin School has generated much public concern. A number of organizations, either existing or recently formed, argue for retention of the School and for an educational use of the property. Moreover, they point to the historic character of the building (it has historic designation both as to interior as well as outside; was the site of Alexander Graham Bell experiments on telegraphy, the first DC high school, etc.) Supporters of disposition point out that the School is in dire need of rehabilitation, which will cost $35 million, which the City’s budget simply cannot afford.

The meeting is being held at:

1200 L Street, NW, 20005
November 18th
Time: 6:30 PM

Persons may sign up to give testimony; contact: Jared Kahn (202) 213-9215 and Nimita Shah (202) 215-3650.
