Potential New Dog Park

A group of local residents is coordinating an application for a legal, neighborhood dog park at the Shaw Recreation Field (11th and Rhode Island Avenue, NW).  The group is trying to collect signatures on a petition to show neighborhood support.  Anyone living within a 10-block radius of Shaw Recreation Field can sign the petition, regardless of their dog-ownership status.  The field for dog-ownership on the petition is merely for statistical purposes.

The ten-block radius extends to 21st Street to the west, Fairmount Street to the north, North Capitol to the east, and G Street to the south.  So, in addition to Shaw, Logan and U Street, this area would include parts of Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Eckington, Bloomingdale, Mount Vernon, Chinatown, Penn Quarter, Washington Circle and Foggy Bottom.

Signatories must include first and last names and mailing addresses, or they will be invalidated.  If you sign the online petition, you should not sign any circulating hard-copy.  More than one person in the same household may sign the petition; both are obviously taxpayers and should get separate and equal status.  (Children's names should not be included.)

Make-up Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling Event

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that it will conduct an additional Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling collection event, to accommodate District residents who did not get a chance to participate in last Saturday's semi-annual event.

Last week's event attracted more than twice the number of people who came last year.  Not everyone could stay until their turn to unload their toxic items and unwanted electronic goods, so DPW is offering this additional collection event to apologize to residents and express its appreciation for their commitment to protecting the environment.

WHO: DC Department of Public Works

WHAT: Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling Collection Event

WHEN: Saturday, May 3, 9 am to 3 pm, rain or shine

WHERE: RFK Stadium, Lot 7, 2400 East Capitol St., SE (If driving west on East Capitol St., stay in the right lane to reach the Lot 7 Entrance Gate.  If driving east on East Capitol St., make a left on 19th St. then a right on C St. and use the C Street Entrance.)

May 17: Weekly Drop-offs Begin

Beginning May 17, DPW will provide weekly HHW/e-cycling collections for District residents on Saturdays at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station, 3200 Benning Road, NE, 8 am to 3 pm.  Later this summer, Saturday HHW/e-cycling drop-offs will begin at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station.

Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling Collection Event

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its annual spring Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling collection event Saturday, April 26, 2008, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre parking lot at 16th and Kennedy Streets, NW. This drop-off service is free and open to all District residents.

DC residents can bring items including leftover cleaning and gardening chemicals, small quantities of gasoline, pesticides and poisons, mercury thermometers, paint, solvents, spent batteries of all kinds, antifreeze, chemistry sets, automotive fluids, and even asbestos floor tiles to the collection site for environmentally safe disposal.

Additionally, an electronics recycler will be onsite to take end-of-life consumer electronics including computers, computer monitors and other accessories, televisions, and office equipment. These machines will be broken down into their component parts (plastic, glass, toxic/heavy metals) and recycled or disposed of safely.

To help protect against identity theft, computers and hard drives brought to the event will be wiped clean three times using US Department of Defense high-level security wiping procedures.

Items that will NOT be accepted during the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection include ammunition, bulk trash, wooden TV consoles, propane tanks, microwave ovens, air conditioners and other appliances, as well as radioactive or medical wastes.

Learn more information about household hazardous waste and e-cycling by visiting DPW's website at www.dpw.dc.gov or by dialing 311.

ANC2F is composed of six Single Member Districts (SMDs), each of which includes about 2,000 residents. Voters who reside in the same SMD as the candidate elect the Commissioners. Commissioners are nonpartisan, unpaid local government officials.
